• Population Spanish women already postpone motherhood until the age of 33

  • 2021 Spain loses population again due to deaths and slowdown in immigration

In

Spain

, there were 159,705 births in the first six months of this year, a figure at a minimum since the end of the 1990s which, however, is slightly higher, 0.13%, than that of the first half of 2021, when children conceived in the first phase of the pandemic were born.

According to data published this Wednesday by the

National Institute of Statistics

(INE), the 159,705 boys and girls born in Spain between January and June of this year are 211 more than the 159,494 in the same period of 2021 (the provisional figure published a year ago was 160,681, somewhat higher than the final figure released today).

Instead, they represent 10,590 less than in the first half of 2020 and around 40,000 less than those registered just six years ago, in 2016.

By region, the number of births increased in the first half compared to 2021 in six of the 17 autonomous communities, especially in

Asturias

, 7.56%, and in

Madrid

, 5.07%, in addition to

Ceuta

, a 5.14%.

It also grew in the

Valencian Community

(2.76%),

Catalonia

(1.57%),

Cantabria

(0.97%) and

Castilla y León

(0.56%).

Where the number of births fell the most was in

La Rioja

, 8.02%, ahead of the two archipelagos: 4.04% in the

Balearic Islands

and 3.84% in the

Canary Islands

;

in addition to

Melilla

, 6.32%.

More deaths

On the other hand, the INE has announced that a total of 275,872 people have died in Spain until July 25 of this year (week 30), 13,317 more people than in the same period of 2021. This number of deaths is also higher than that registered until week 30 of the year 2019 (249,459) and the year 2018 (256,571).

However, there are 19,062 fewer deaths than until this week of the year 2020 (294,939), which was the first of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Most of the deaths produced in 2022 accumulate in the summer months, according to the daily mortality monitoring system (MoMo) of the Carlos III Institute, which attributes up to 2,223 deaths to high temperatures in the month of July.

In total, the MoMo has recorded 5,276 heat-related deaths so far this year, compared to 744 in 2021.

On the other hand, it is observed that most of the deaths were concentrated in advanced ages.

Specifically, 1,091 men between the ages of 85 and 89 and 1,438 women in the same age range have died.

In the age group over 90 years, 3,259 men and 6,774 women have died.
