After a fire broke out early in the morning on a Russian military base in the north of the occupied Crimean peninsula and ammunition exploded, a fire is said to have broken out in the afternoon at a Russian military airfield near the Crimean capital Simferopol.

According to the Russian daily newspaper Kommersant, eyewitnesses reported black clouds over the base in Gvardeyskoye.

According to the newspaper, Russian authorities are examining the suspicion of a drone attack.

The administration in Crimea has not yet commented.

Earlier, at around 5:15 a.m., a breakout broke out in a temporary ammunition depot at the military base in the Dzhankoy district in northern Crimea, according to a statement by the Ministry of Defense in Moscow published by Russian news agencies.

"As a result of the fire, there was an explosion of ammunition," it said.

According to the Russian news agency TASS, buildings, power supply systems and a railway line were damaged.

The Russian Defense Ministry said it was sabotage.

Moscow did not provide any information about possible perpetrators.

According to Crimean governor Sergei Aksyonov, two civilians were injured.

The Russian Defense Ministry said the injuries were not serious.

The explosions continued three hours after the fire broke out, Aksyonov said in a video message on Telegram.

According to the authorities, the explosion occurred in the village of Maiskoye on the site of a former farm.

This is used by the Russian armed forces as an ammunition store.

Only on Tuesday a week ago there were heavy explosions at a Russian air force base in Crimea.

According to the authorities, one person was killed in the explosions at the base in Saki near the resort town of Nowofyodorovka.

There were also 14 injured.

Experts believe that Ukraine struck the base, destroying several fighter jets.

Kyiv has not officially confirmed the attack.

Russia, on the other hand, claims the explosion occurred because of fire safety violations.

According to the authorities, a Ukrainian drone struck the Russian Black Sea Fleet in the port city of Sevastopol on July 31.

There were injuries then too.

According to the newspaper Kommersant, the Russian domestic intelligence service FSB reports that on August 4, 9 and 12 “Ukrainian saboteurs” destroyed six high-voltage power lines in the Kursk region of Russia, which borders Ukraine.
