With a best jump of 8.06m, Pommery (21) jumped exactly as far as silver medalist, Briton Jacob Fincham-Dukes, and bronze medalist, Swede Thobias Montler.

But the medal escapes him because his second best jump (7.85 m) is worse than that of his opponents (7.97 m and 7.95 m respectively).

To add to the frustration, it was on his last attempt that Montler was invited to the podium, to the detriment of the young French jumper, who was experiencing his first international championship as a senior.

Tentoglou won thanks to a leap to 8.52 m, a record for the European Championships.

Pommery had so far only jumped above 8m once, when he took his personal best to 8.17m at the end of May.
