Iran's government has blamed writer Salman Rushdie for the attack he suffered on Friday "for insulting 1.5 billion Muslims" and denied ties to the attacker.

"We do not consider anyone other than him (

) and his followers worthy of blame and even condemnation," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman

told a news conference .
