At a live press conference in the capital, Nairobi, the Electoral Commission was to present the results of the presidential election held last week.

The message from the commission was different.

- We cannot stand for the results to be presented, said Juliana Cherera, the commission's president at the presentation.

She and three other members distanced themselves from the election results.

However, it is unclear what errors they believe have been committed.

The statements were followed by chaos in the room.

Television images show how different groups in the stands ended up in scuffles and loud fights.

Armed guards intervened and several people had to leave the premises.

Several members of the electoral commission are said to have been injured in the commotion.

Challengers won a tie election

When the official election results were later presented, it was clear that the country's new president will be the 55-year-old businessman William Ruto.

Among other things, he has gone to the polls on agricultural reforms and investments in the economically important sector for Kenya.
