While gigafeux have burned thousands of hectares in Gironde, many surrounding prefectures have decided to ban all fireworks to celebrate August 15.

However, there are exceptions on the Atlantic coast, such as Royan.

The mayor of the city explains to Europe 1 why he decided to maintain the event.

Despite the risk of fire, the inhabitants of Royan in Charente-Maritime and tourists, a total of 100,000 people, will be able to enjoy the August 15 fireworks display this Monday evening.

This will be directed towards the sea with all possible precautions, explains the mayor of the city, Patrick Marengo.

"It's fireworks fired from an urban beach, that is to say without a nearby wooded area," he says at the microphone of Europe 1.

A security PC that can interrupt the fireworks at any time

The LR mayor of this city of nearly 20,000 inhabitants on the Atlantic coast continues: "We can shoot as much as we shoot from the sea, that is to say on platforms where all the charges are prepositioned. , and below there is sea water. This means that the platforms being oriented towards the sea, with about five degrees, the risk is very low", he explains.

Patrick Marengo guarantees at the microphone of Europe 1 that the city services are "able to interrupt the fire at any time".

In addition, "there is an inter-service security command post which leads the whole operation", adds the mayor of Royan.

"We managed it upstream, we prepared it, we planned it. It's really serious", supports Patrick Marengo.

"Bring joy, not disfigure a landscape"

Finally, the elected LR wishes to clarify that this event does not mean a lack of consideration for the affected municipalities.

"We are very supportive of the municipalities that have been tested, very supportive of all the firefighters who intervened. This fireworks display is intended to bring joy, and not to disfigure a landscape", he concludes with Europe 1.

The city of Royan, a hundred kilometers from the Gironde, benefits from an exception granted to a few other town halls, located on the Atlantic coast and not far from the regions affected by the Girondin gigafeux of July and last week.
