The "round table" conference adopted - today, Sunday - several recommendations to solve the political crisis in Sudan, while the army commander, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, gave the political forces between two things, and pledged that the military institution will remain at the same distance from everyone.

The "round table" conference organized by the "Nidaa Ahl al-Sudan" initiative recommended the completion of the transitional period in the country within a period of time not exceeding 18 months, upon which an independent civilian government with defined tasks will be established.

This came in the final statement of the conference, which was held for two days in the capital, Khartoum, with regional and international participation, to discuss a way out of the political crisis in the country.

According to the statement, "the conference concluded the need to complete the transitional period within a period of time not exceeding 18 months, upon which an independent civilian government with defined tasks will be based," adding that "the top priority of the civilian government is to achieve the people's aspirations for a rational and democratic government through free and fair elections."

The statement stated that the transitional government will work to stop the economic deterioration, establish security and the prestige of the state, and achieve transitional justice and peace.

The conference called for consolidating the principle of peaceful transfer of power and pushing towards the path of achieving democracy through elections, which represent the basis of political legitimacy, creating a democratic climate and guaranteeing political rights and freedoms.

It is noteworthy that on May 21, the prominent Sheikh Al-Tayyib Al-Jedd launched the initiative to call the people of Sudan for national reconciliation.

The initiative organized the Round Table Conference, which continued yesterday and today, after the failure of local, international and regional initiatives that sought to resolve the political crisis in the country.

Since October 25, 2021, Sudan has witnessed popular protests calling for the return of civilian rule, and rejecting the exceptional measures taken by the President of the Sovereign Council, the army commander, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, which the rejectionists consider a military coup.

Army chief speaks

On the other hand, Al-Burhan denied the validity of his accusation of carrying out a military coup, and said that his measures aim to correct the course of the transitional period, and he pledged to hand over power through elections or a national consensus.

Today, Sunday, Al-Burhan gave the political forces a choice between: forming an inclusive government, or heading for general elections.

This was during a speech he delivered on the occasion of the 68th National Day of the Army in the northern city of Shendi.

The head of the Sovereignty Council said that the armed forces will not take sides in the country, stressing that they are with the people's demands put forward in an elected civilian government, "and will devote themselves to performing their duty to protect the country and guard its national gains from every aggressor and stalker."

Al-Burhan called on the political forces to assume their national responsibilities, because the country cannot tolerate more political fragmentation and polarization, he said.

He added that the transitional period is surrounded by many challenges, "time is slipping from our hands, and our people are long overdue."

"We kept repeating that effective solutions will not come without consensus or free elections," he said.
