If the subject of the choice of end of life had already been brought to the National Assembly in 2021, Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of the institution, would be in favor of the question being debated again.

"We will have to continue this work", she underlined at the microphone of Charles Villeneuve, in the Grands Entretiens de l'été, on Europe 1.

INTERVIEW

This is a subject that concerns us all.

That of the end of life and of being able to choose to be accompanied at this moment.

If, in 2021, the subject had been brought to the National Assembly, via a text carried by the deputy Olivier Falorni for a "free and chosen end of life", the deputies could perhaps again look into this question.

In any case, this is what the President of the National Assembly Yaël Braun-Pivet would like, who returned to this question in the Grands Entretiens de l'été, at the microphone of Charles Villeneuve on Europe 1.

"This law will not take anything away from anyone"

According to her, "it is a subject that crosses society and I believe that we must move forward on this question by allowing everyone to choose this end of life and to be able to resort to euthanasia if the conditions, which we will define in the law , are met. For example in the event of an illness which has led to a life-threatening diagnosis, in the event of suffering which cannot be alleviated", she explains.

"We will have to continue this work but I believe that our citizens are waiting for this law to have the ability to freely choose how they want to end their days. This law will not take anything away from anyone", insists the President of the Assembly national.

"It's one more freedom that will be based on everyone's choice. We must not dictate to citizens how they should live, or how they should die."

As for the possibility of finding a majority within the Assembly on this subject, Yaël Braun-Pivet considers that "when we dealt with this question during the previous mandate, we had found a majority which had emerged to vote for a article of law carried by Olivier Falorni. I had taken a favorable position and I have never received so many messages of support from fellow citizens to tell me that it was time to move forward on this subject. Society is mature today , although of course we will also have to work on the issue of access to palliative care. This is not opposed. We must offer both options to our fellow citizens and it will be up to them to choose", she said. concluded.
