In the wake of the Arsène Lupine series broadcast on Netflix in 2021, the small Norman island of Étretat is experiencing a record influx of tourists, almost six times more than usual, to the chagrin of its 1,200 inhabitants.

Faced with this, the town hall would like to prohibit the parking of tourist cars in the town.

REPORTAGE

On the promenade of Étretat, tourists flock to take photos in front of the famous hollow needle dear to Maurice Leblanc, seen in the series.

"We saw the Lupine series on Netflix. It has a lot more to my teenage son", testifies a woman at the microphone of Europe 1. "There was the scene where he lost his son and he was looking for him, suddenly , we came to see this place", adds another tourist.

Six times more tourists than usual"

More than 7,000 visitors stroll through the streets of the seaside resort every day.

This is six times the population in normal times.

Even this beach attendant saturates in the face of the flood of tourists.

"As the foreigners have returned, there are even more people. There, it has to stop anyway because it's really a lot of people. This year, it's impressive", explains this resident.

In the city, you can see endless lines of cars looking for a parking space or crowded streets.

For its inhabitants, it is too much, even much too much.

"Tourists are not necessarily respectful of the site and all that bothers us a little bit," says a resident.

"It's hellish. We're overrun. It's catastrophic, there are too many people. The people of Étretat can't take it anymore," adds another.
