For the past month, two extensive fires have been ravaging the popular holiday areas on the Atlantic coast.

On Friday, the fire brigade stopped the progress of one of the fires.

That development and the fact that a few residents are now allowed to return home instills cautious hope that the crisis will subside.

International assistance

The regional manager says that the firefighters have been reinforced by Polish, Austrian, German and Romanian colleagues.

Several countries, including Sweden, contribute with aircraft to waterbomb the exposed areas.

The 36-year-old Greek pilot Anastasis Sariouglou says he has never seen such a violent forest fire before.

- We know that we are of your help, my friends, which makes us happy, he says to the French daily newspaper Le Monde.

Even Polynesia – one of France's former colonies – has come to the rescue.

On Friday afternoon, French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted:

"They come from the other side of the world to support their colleagues.

We thank the Polynesian firefighters for their solidarity,” he wrote, adding “Mauruuru!”

- thank you in Tahitian.

More countries in Europe affected

France is only one country in Europe affected by fires this summer.

More than a thousand people have died in connection with the heat waves in Spain and Portugal.

A forest fire in the Serra de Estrela mountain range in Portugal has consumed 10,000 hectares of forest.

At the same time, Great Britain has declared drought in several parts of the country during Friday.

Among other things, Yorkshire has introduced an irrigation ban – for the first time in 27 years.

The country has experienced its driest July since 1935.
