  • 1-O All about the illegal referendum

Five years later, the Catalan independence movement has remained as a struggle between the two parties that make up the

Government

, ERC and JxCat, to control an electorate of just over a million and a half votes.

They are the ones that guarantee in

Catalonia

, with the current electoral law, dominating institutions such as the Generalitat and being able to manage public resources and put your most faithful followers as positions.

With this idea, the

Consell per la República

, led by the former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont (JxCat), wants to anticipate Esquerra Republicana and bring together the sovereign claims planned for the fifth anniversary of 1-O, more when we are at the gates of a 2023 with municipal elections that are expected to be visceral between the two formations in some important cities of the community.

For this reason, JxCat appeals to the epic and the "validity" of the result of the unilateral referendum of 1-O and wants to celebrate it with rallies and protests that recover that fighting spirit, despite the fact that the ERC is more on the path of pact and the agreement with a government of Pedro Sánchez much more receptive to nationalist demands to maintain power.

Specifically, the Consell per la República is preparing a demonstration on 1-O at the

Arc de Triomf in Barcelona

, although the celebrations for the fifth anniversary of the voting will begin the day before, as explained to Efe by

Antoni Castellà

, head of institutional relations for the body led by Puigdemont.

Specifically, on the night of September 30, citizens are summoned to return to the schools where they spent the night before voting the next day five years ago to remember that in some centers "there was police violence" to prevent the referendum prohibited by the Constitutional Court.

"We want to make it very clear that we won on 1-O and that, therefore, that victory is still valid," said Castellà, who stressed that the nightly entry into schools will be a "prior" to the concentration and the political act of the 1-O around five in the afternoon at the Arc de Triomf.

These calls intend to "claim that the referendum was legal under the protection of a law of Parliament" suspended by the Constitutional Court, that "that day the

yes

to independence won massively" and that the result "is still valid."

For this reason, the Consell considers that this sovereignist support "politically and democratically legitimizes any democratic action to become an independent State."

Call for a demonstration in Barcelona five years later

«This 1-O cannot be just a vindication of what happened five years ago, it must also be an act of reaffirmation, because that result legitimizes us politically.

This 1-O must mark a before and after, there must be a change of cycle, ”said Castellà, who is also a spokesman for

Demòcrates de Catalunya

.

That is why he expects a “massive act” in which “entities, citizens, parties and institutions shake hands again.”

In this way, the Consell, controlled by JxCat, wants to use the ephemeris to launch a warning to the ERC that they want to establish themselves as the beacon of independence by returning to the path of confrontation and unilateralism that led Catalonia to an internal confrontation, between supporters and opponents of secession, and with the State, which solved it with the application of article 155 of the

Constitution

.

To get more support for this unilateralism, the Consell wants to mobilize the population again, making it clear that the objective is independence and explaining how to achieve it, especially considering that there are fewer and fewer secessionists according to the latest barometer of the

Center for Opinion Studies

of the Generalitat.

The Consell will focus on the idea that the State "went bankrupt in Catalan territory because it exercised violence" on 1-O while the independence movement "won because for the first time institutions, political parties, organized civil society and citizens acted together" .

Despite this argument, five years later Catalonia is not independent.

Carles Puigdemont's organization, which will intervene telematically from Belgium, wants to have representatives from the ANC, Òmnium Cultural, the

Association of Municipalities for Independence

(AMI), the

Intersindical-CSC union

and the

Barcelona Chamber of Commerce

.
