At eleven o'clock on Friday morning, local time, the British-Indian writer Salman Rushdie was stabbed during a lecture in Chautauqua in the state of New York.

Among the hundreds of people in the audience was Bradley Fisher, who was an eyewitness to the crime.

He describes how he couldn't believe his eyes when a man stormed onto the stage and attacked the author.

- It looked like the man hit him repeatedly in the chest, he says.
