The Chief Electoral Officer Wafula Chebukati has urged people to be patient and not to panic over media houses releasing different information about the election results.

SVT's Africa correspondent Johan Ripås says that the result is expected to come on Sunday at the earliest.

Risk of unrest

In the past, contested elections have led to violence or the entire process being cancelled.

Johan Ripås says that there is a feeling of unease in the country and also a risk of unrest if the election is perceived as ugly.

- But the process has so far been very transparent.

And the people I meet say they will accept the result, says Johan Ripås.

The country's 2017 election was annulled by the country's highest court, citing irregularities and mismanagement by the electoral commission IEBC, putting pressure on the commission to get everything right this time.

Before the election, the situation has been even between the current vice-president William Ruto and the long-time opposition leader Raila Odinga, who is now supported by the ruling party.

"hustling"

The 55-year-old businessman William Ruto hopes to take revenge in the election through his appearance as a self-proclaimed "hustler" who has risen in society on his own from a simple background.

Among his main promises to shore up the covid- and inflation-ridden economy are job-creating investments in the agricultural sector.

Odinga, for his part, promises support payments to the poorest, more accessible healthcare and a crackdown on corruption.
