Ukraine seeks Arab support in the face of Russia and pledges to resume wheat exports

Ukrainian Special Envoy for the Middle East and Africa Maxim Sobh said Thursday that Ukraine is ready to resume wheat exports to Arab and African countries after mediation efforts.

Sobh made his statements via a televised circuit at a meeting of the League of Arab States.

"Today we have here in Ukraine more than 20 million tons of grain that can be exported mainly to Arab and African countries, but until recently, we were not able to do this because of the blockade of our seaports, which were imposed by the Russian invaders completely and tightly," he said.

"We in Ukraine are ready to continue supplying grain to the world and Arab markets with firmness and seriousness. You all know that thanks to painstaking negotiations and effective mediation of some of our partners, the practical implementation of the plan to resume the export of Ukrainian grain and other agricultural products from our Black Sea ports towards our partners has recently begun," he said. Sobh appealed to Arab countries to confront shipments of grain, which Russia is suspected of having seized from Ukraine.

"I would also like, through you, gentlemen representatives of the Arab countries participating in this meeting, to appeal to the authorities of the Arab countries from the Gulf to the ocean and call them to seize all suspicious shipments of grain because Russia's impunity will encourage them to continue stealing grain from the occupied Ukrainian south," he said.

He added, "We count on broader support from the Arab world for all issues on the agenda of the United Nations, which are related to condemning the Russian armed aggression against Ukraine and ways to stop it."
