Since 2020, new rules have applied regarding public fishing for the signal crayfish, which is classified as an invasive species.

The aim of the rules is to reduce the spread of signal crayfish into crayfish waters – even so, the rules are not followed by everyone.

Public fishing for signal crayfish in Lake Vättern has been shown to increase the risk of these spreading to waters where they are not found today.

Concern for the future of crayfish

Michael Diemer, who is an investigator at the Norwegian Sea and Water Authority, is worried about the future of crayfish in Sweden.

- We have the native crayfish that we want to protect.

It dies if you release the signal crayfish in the same water.

So it's time to stop it, he says.
