US President Joe Biden and his family have arrived on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, for an extended family vacation.

His beloved grandson, Beau, had grabbed the eye on departure by mimicking the president in a matching blue suit, waving to goodbyes in Washington.

In addition to first lady Jill Biden, his son Hunter, daughter-in-law Melissa Cohen, and grandson Beau are joined.

While Biden is in South Carolina, the US House of Representatives is set to vote to approve a bill filled with Biden's priorities, including the largest investment in history to combat climate change, at $369 billion over 10 years.

Biden's vacation plans for 2021 have been scrambled, due to Washington's legislative calendar, an increase in coronavirus cases, and the chaotic withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan.

In fact, summer vacations are a presidential tradition, and George W. Bush often spent August tending plants on his ranch in central Texas, while the weather was over 37 degrees Celsius.

Barack Obama has been playing golf on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts;

While Donald Trump spent some time at his home at his golf club, in central New Jersey.

The White House has emphasized, in the past, that the president does not truly stray from the responsibilities of the job, and that he will continue to consult with aides and receive daily national security briefings regardless of where he is or whether he is on summer vacation.

At times, presidents have had to make legacy decisions while on vacation, including Bush's response to Hurricane Katrina, which swept through New Orleans in 2005. Bill Clinton ordered airstrikes against al Qaeda terrorists while on his summer stay in Martha's Vineyard, in response to the bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

George Bush Sr. plotted the American response to Saddam Hussein's 1990 invasion of Kuwait from his family's oceanfront compound in Kennebunkport, Maine.

On Kiawah Island, where Biden and his family are currently vacationing, there are several private residences, including the home of former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley;

the home of Olympic gold-medal basketball player, Tara Lipinski;

and the home of NBA basketball player, Ray Allen.

• The White House has confirmed that the President is not really shying away from the responsibilities of the job, and that he continues to consult with his aides and obtain daily national security briefings regardless of his location, or whether he is on summer vacation.
