The number of people that Matlaget i Eskilstuna helps is increasing all the time.

A year ago, the organization helped around 50 children and today they help around 150 children.

From approximately 70 families a year ago to a total of just over 120 families today.

Carina Helmisdotter finds the development worrying.

- By next week, we will be at 140 families.

It is a frightening development, she says.

On Tuesday, the food agency opened up new applications for emergency food support for the first time in two and a half months.

Forced to refuse

The application period resulted in six granted applications and eight rejections.

About 30 people who stood in line were told to come back at the next opportunity as Matlaget did not have time for everyone during the day.

Those who are denied receive it because they live above the national minimum subsistence level.

On the other hand, those who are granted food support are given a fixed time when they can go to Matlaget once a week and pick up food.

- I have worked here for three and a half years and before we could be open every Tuesday.

Sometimes there was one and sometimes there were five and sometimes none.

Now we can be open one or two Tuesdays and then we have to close for applications for a couple of months because it gets full all at once, says Carina Helmisdotter.
