Today, Wednesday, a court in the United Arab Emirates annulled a prison sentence against American citizen and human rights lawyer Assem Ghafoor, a lawyer said.

His lawyer told Reuters that the court ruled that Ghafoor must pay a fine of 5 million dirhams ($1.36 million).

Ghafour was arrested last month during a stopover at Dubai airport on charges related to his conviction in absentia for money laundering, charges that Ghafoor denies.

At the time, the United States denied submitting any request to the UAE to arrest the American lawyer and human rights activist Assem Ghafoor, which contradicts the official statements issued by officials in the UAE that Ghafour’s arrest was made at the request of Washington and in coordination with it, as he is the subject of an investigation by the American authorities.
