Greece: 50 people missing in the sinking of a migrant boat

The Greek Coast Guard is searching for dozens of shipwrecked people in the Aegean Sea.

Their boat had sailed from the Turkish city of Antalya and was destined for Italy.

There were 80 people on the boat according to the Greek Coast Guard, 50 are missing.

They are Afghans, Iraqis and Iranians and their boat sailed from the Turkish city of Antalya, located on the neighboring Turkish coast.

He was trying to reach the Italian coast.

Four boats that were sailing in the area of ​​the sinking are taking part in the search for the missing, as well as two coastguard patrol boats and a helicopter from the Greek Air Force.

So far, 29 people have been rescued.

Strong winds, 40 to 50 km/h (7 on the Beaufort scale), complicate operations.

The last shipwreck in the Aegean Sea took place on June 19, off the island of Mykonos.

Eight people had died in this very dangerous crossing between the Greek islands and the Turkish coasts which cost the lives of many migrants.

Dozens of dead

Since the start of the year, 64 people have died in the eastern Mediterranean, and 111 in 2021, according to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
