The president of the law commission, Sacha Houlié, will propose at the start of the school year to his Renaissance group to support a bill he has just tabled for the right to vote for foreigners in local elections.

He affirms that his action is part of the "philosophy" of the Minister of the Interior.

The Renaissance deputy (ex-LREM) Sacha Houlié, has just tabled a bill to grant the right to vote in municipal elections to all foreigners, arousing criticism from the right, the National Rally and the Minister of the Interior.

Gérald Darmanin indeed said he was "firmly opposed" to this measure.

Coming from the right, the Beauvau tenant has been pushing for weeks for a rapprochement with Les Républicains.

“These people pay taxes”

So, for him, out of the question to adopt a reform of the left.

But Sacha Houlié is not giving up.

He knows he can count on part of the new political generation, in particular on the deputies of the NUPES, largely favorable to the idea like the Insoumise Manon Aubry, questioned on this subject this Wednesday morning on Europe 1: " There was a proposal like this on the table. We would be happy to vote for it. It's a very simple principle. It's that when you work in a municipality, you pay local taxes, you pay property taxes. And therefore there is no reason that these people should not have the right to political life and to be able to vote".

Shields raised at LR and RN

If, on the left, the measure is well received, at Les Républicains and at the National Rally, it is an outcry.

Jordan Bardella went so far as to regret "the final dispossession of the French from their country".

To calm things down, Aurore Bergé, the patroness of the Renaissance deputies, announced the creation of a working group to reflect on the question.

This sea serpent may still have a bright future ahead of it...
