A popular mobilization was launched on Tuesday August 9 at the initiative of the Patriotic Salvation Movement, the party of the late President Idriss Déby Itno and the town hall of Ndjamena.

They wanted to give a triumphant welcome to the president of the transitional military council, Mahamat Idriss Déby, who was returning from Doha to Qatar, where he signed a peace agreement with some forty rebel movements with a view to their participation in the inclusive national dialogue planned for next August 20.

When he got off the plane this Tuesday a little before noon, Mahamat Idriss Déby was applauded by the entire presidential lounge where the officials were massed.

After the usual greetings, the president's procession did not bow to the walkabout that the organizers of the mobilization hoped for.

Thousands of Ndjaménois sporting the colors of different parties which support the transition had moved.

But for these Ndjaménois who made the trip from the airport,

what happened on Monday in Doha

is to be welcomed: “

We went out to express our joy, our hope to see the page of the rebellion turn in our country.

said one.

We are delighted with this atmosphere of peace which has already begun and we say bravo because it is a great step forward;

Chad has just taken a big step

,” said another.

Later in the afternoon, political parties and associations opposed to the transition described as a simple "

rallying

" the peace agreement signed Monday in Doha by some forty politico-military movements.

The head of the junta, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, defends the Doha agreement and the opening of a national dialogue on August 20.

The civil society platform Wakit Tama criticizes a minimum agreement.

Because this ceasefire torn after five months of negotiations has not been signed by several of the main rebel groups including the Fact.

And therefore does not rule out the risk of new conflict, believes Soumaine Adoum, spokesperson for Wakit Tama.

18 have not signed, out of the 52. And 18 among the most important in terms of threats to peace [...] What is the agenda for the dialogue?

We do not know.

We're going to have a debate fair that will debate everything

Soumaine Adoum

Wakit Tama will therefore not participate in the national dialogue on August 20 as it stands, unless the transitional government agrees to discuss the essential issues.
