Because of climate change, bird communities are likely to change significantly over the next few decades.

This is shown by a study by researchers at the Senckenberg Institute.

Together with colleagues from Munich and Durham, they evaluated data on 8,768 bird species from all over the world.

In two different scenarios - one with medium and one with low greenhouse gas emissions - they examined how biodiversity is likely to develop up to the year 2080.

For large parts of Europe, the researchers predict strong restructuring.

They result from the loss of particular lineages in some regions and the immigration of species that compete with native birds for food and nesting sites.

According to the scientists, the changes will also have consequences for the performance of ecosystems - for example for seed dispersal and pollination.
