7 dead, 6 missing due to torrential rains in Seoul

Seven people were killed and six are missing due to heavy rains in central South Korea, including the capital, Seoul, on Monday and Tuesday, causing power outages and flooding subway stations.

According to the Central Headquarters for Disaster Countermeasures and Safety, according to Yonhap News Agency, heavy rains displaced 163 people from 107 families in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province and Incheon City, west of Seoul.

As of 9:05 p.m. Monday, Shin Daebang-dong, Donggak District, recorded 141.5 millimeters of rain per hour, the highest it had fallen in Seoul in 80 years, when it recorded 118.6 millimeters on August 5, 1942.

South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol held an emergency meeting today to discuss dealing with the consequences of the torrential rains, and called on relevant ministries and local governments to strengthen the emergency work system and make efforts to focus on preventing human damage.
