Tens of thousands of tourists are stranded in China

The Chinese authorities extended the closure imposed on the tropical island of Hainan beyond the coastal city of Sanya, in an attempt to combat the outbreak of the Corona virus.

On Monday, state media reported that four other cities on the island have now been covered, including Wanning, Danzhou, Cheonghai and Lingshui.

Tens of thousands of Chinese tourists are already stranded in Sanya, known as "Chinese Hawaii," as flights, rail services and other public transportation were halted in the city over the weekend.

Chinese state media reported that the authorities took measures after more than 1,100 cases were discovered on the southern island of Hainan, which has a population of 10 million.

It is worth noting that about 30,000 tourists are stuck in hotels in Sanya alone, while about 50,000 others have been asked to stay in their holiday apartments, and the authorities have asked hotels to halve their prices for stranded tourists.
