Europe 1 Studio SEASON 2021 - 202207:00 a.m., August 08, 2022

Discover the cross portrait of two men who seem to be opposites: on the one hand Napoleon III, the "Prince President" elected in 1848, and on the other George Eugène Haussmann, whose career has not yet led him than from sub-prefecture to sub-prefecture.

How will the destinies of these two ambitious people intersect?

What are the very personal ties that unite them in reality?

And how will they start working together on a project that will change their lives: redesign the city of Paris.

In this first part of the episode produced by Europe 1 Studio, Clémentine Portier-Kaltenbach begins to paint the portrait of Napoleon III and Haussmann.

Having come to power in 1848, Napoleon III is a romantic hero with a head full of dreams and projects.

But he is indecisive, this statesman born in such a prestigious lineage struggles to make up his mind.

During a visit to Bordeaux, he crossed paths with the prefect of the Gironde, a certain George Eugène Haussmann, then 44 years old.

A personality far removed from his own: Haussmann deploys an energy that impresses his contemporaries in each of his projects.

From the height of his two meters, he can be pushy, arrogant or even brutal.

But the two men actually have a lot in common.

Napoleon III considered that the Second Empire should be a bridge to modernity, with the city of Paris in sight.

He will find in Haussmann an arm of genius to achieve this... This story is a Europe 1 Studio production.
