Three people have died after 12 construction workers were surprised by a rapid rise in water levels in Moscow's sewers after heavy rain.

"Unfortunately, three workers died, and their bodies were recovered by rescue workers," the Interfax news agency quoted the Russian Civil Defense as saying.

Authorities are investigating a possible violation of labor protection rules.

Construction workers were cleaning the sewers when the water level suddenly rose sharply due to heavy rain, and they were washed away.

Five men managed to reach the roof on their own, while the fire brigade rescued four, according to the city administration.

South of Moscow saw heavy rain and some hail on Sunday after a period of intense heat.
