Faced with the dangers of road accidents for motorcyclists, the motorcycle airbag has just been introduced.

Worn over the jacket, it activates in seconds in the event of an impact and absorbs shocks to protect the driver's vital parts.

A new technology that comes in addition to adapted equipment.

Securing motorcyclists in the event of an accident.

This is the purpose of the motorcycle airbag, which works more or less on the same principle as that installed on cars.

Connected by a cable to the motorcycle or equipped with sensors, the airbag is worn over the jacket and is triggered at the slightest impact.

"In less than ten milliseconds, the gas cartridge will inflate its pockets and protect all the vital parts of the motorcyclist, in particular the cervical collar, the costal area but also the entire dorsal area. And for several seconds, 8 to 10 centimeters of sausage , inflated to very high pressure, will absorb the shocks. It does not stop everything, but it can give a second chance, "explains the lieutenant colonel who commands the departmental road safety squadron of the Alpes-Maritimes gendarmerie.

Have suitable equipment

"There is only the airbag which seriously protects the thoracic part and the lower abdomen", adds Thierry, a motorcycle enthusiast who works voluntarily in Nice for road safety.

In his company in Cannes, Sébastien Béniger has created a motorcycle section.

Convinced of the usefulness of the airbag, he offered a check for more than €100 to allow his colleagues to equip themselves.

"You need the gloves, the helmet and of course the pants. When I see some people in shorts and flip-flops on the motorcycles, it horrifies me," he berates.

On average, a motorcycle airbag costs €300.
