Israel and the Palestinians agree to a truce in Gaza

Sources said that Israel and the Palestinians agreed to abide by a truce in Gaza starting Sunday evening, pursuant to Cairo's proposal, after Israel bombed Palestinian targets since last Friday, prompting Palestinian militants to target its cities with long-range missiles.

An Egyptian security source said that Israel had agreed to the truce offer, while a Palestinian official familiar with the Egyptian mediation efforts said that it would enter into force at 20:00 (1900 GMT).

Spokesmen for Israel and Islamic Jihad, the faction that has been fighting in Gaza since the clashes broke out on Friday, did not confirm this, saying only that they were in contact with Cairo.
