On Saturday evening, the rescue service issued a VMA - important message to the public - after a small amount of oil reached the beaches north of Helsingborg.

There was then a concern that more oil could be found further out in the open water.

In particular, the advice applied in the towns of Hittarp, Domsten, Viken, Lerberget and Höganäs.

"One should avoid touching it"

On Sunday, the Coast Guard checked the area off the beaches with an oil recovery vessel and aircraft to check the extent of the spill, but nothing was found in the water.

- Nothing, that is why we have taken the decision to lift the VMA, says Peter Hjort, internal commander at the rescue service.

However, there are still oil spills on several beaches.

- You must avoid touching it, says Peter Hjort, and explains that the municipalities will now take over and clean up the sites.

The beaches must be cleaned

The city of Helsingborg urges the public not to enter the beaches from Domstens harbor to Grå Läge.

- The oil is on the shoreline in the seaweed and there is a risk that both people and dogs can get it on themselves, that is what we want to avoid, says Anna Möller, urban planning director at the City of Helsingborg, who says that their cleanup work will begin on Monday morning.

Höganäs also advises against swimming in the Bay, as cleanup is underway.

Criminal report drawn up

The source of the release is unclear.

A criminal complaint has been drawn up and based on what the analysis of the oil shows, a position will be taken on what other measures should be implemented, according to the Coast Guard.
