Lightning strike causes massive fire at fuel storage facility in Cuba

Two fuel storage tanks exploded near a supertanker port in Matanzas, Cuba, on Saturday morning, following a fire that raged overnight after lightning struck one of the tanks on Friday evening.

State television said at least 49 people were wounded in the explosion of the second tank.

Civilians have already been evacuated from the area.

Health Minister Jose Angel Portal Miranda said in a tweet on Twitter that one of the injured was in critical condition and seven were in a "serious" condition.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel wrote on Twitter before the second explosion that firefighters were "trying to avoid the spread of fire and any fuel leakage" in Matanzas Bay.

By Saturday morning, the fire appeared to be completely out of control, threatening nearby fuel storage tanks.
