Witnesses said that a bomb exploded in the Afghan capital, Kabul, today, Saturday, while ambulances were seen rushing to the place amid fears of many casualties, coinciding with the start of preparations for the Shiite celebration of Ashura.

The blast occurred in a busy commercial street on the western side of the city, where members of the Shiite community in the country usually gather.

Video footage posted online showed ambulances rushing to the scene, also near bus stops.

No armed group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, which came before the Ashura celebration, in which Shiites commemorate the martyrdom of Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.

The explosion comes a day after 8 people were killed and 18 others were wounded in an explosion carried out by ISIS.

Afghan police said Friday's blast occurred in a crowded residential area inhabited by Shiites.

A video clip circulated on social media of what is believed to be the site of the explosion showed men rushing to help the injured after the accident.

It is noteworthy that ISIS has previously claimed responsibility for attacks targeting the Shiite minority in recent times.

The branch of the Islamic State, which has been active in Afghanistan since 2014, is seen as the most serious security challenge in the country.
