China News Agency, Moscow, August 5 (Reporter Tian Bing) The Russian Ministry of Defense issued an "emergency statement" on the 5th, saying that the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant area in the Ukrainian city of Ener Godar was shelled three times by the Ukrainian army and caught fire that day. The fire was immediately extinguished by firefighters.

The statement said that between 16:20 and 17:24 on the 5th, the Ukrainian army carried out three shellings on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant area and the city of Ener Godar, firing a total of 20 152mm artillery shells.

The shelling was carried out by a unit of the 45th Artillery Brigade of the Ukrainian Army from a firing position near the village of Marganets on the opposite bank of the Ukrainian-controlled Kremenchug reservoir.

Due to the shelling of the city of Enel Godar, some power outages and water cuts were caused. Part of the equipment of Unit 3 of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant was powered off, and the output power of Unit 4 was reduced.

In addition, a fire at a hydrogen station caused by a damaged hydrogen pipeline has been extinguished by the emergency department in time.

The projectiles fired by the Ukrainian army did not hit nearby fuel facilities and oxygen stations, thereby avoiding a larger fire at Europe's largest nuclear power plant and a possible nuclear radiation accident, the statement said.

Russia calls on the international community to condemn the "nuclear terrorism" carried out by Ukraine.

The statement emphasized that if the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is subjected to similar "provocations" again, the entire responsibility for the damage to the operation of the facility will be borne by the Uzbek side.

According to the TASS news agency on the 5th, citing a report from the local government of Enier Godar City, the Ukrainian army again launched artillery fire on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant two hours after the last attack.

The local government is confirming the nature and scale of the damage to the nuclear power plant.

Earlier in the day, the local government said that the Ukrainian army shelled the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and caused a fire, and two power lines necessary for the operation of the power equipment of the nuclear power plant were also damaged.

Ukraine's State Nuclear Power Corporation said on the 5th that the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was still operating and that no radioactive leakage had been found, and condemned the Russian military attack on the nuclear power plant.

The Ukrainian state news agency said through social platforms that the Russian army attacked the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant with rockets that day, causing damage to the nitrogen oxygen station and auxiliary buildings.

At present, the Ukrainian staff of the nuclear power plant have taken precautionary measures to reduce the risk of explosions and fires in the relevant facilities.

The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is the largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine and one of the largest in Europe.

In March 2022, the nuclear power plant was controlled by the Russian military.

The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant is currently operating at 70% of its full capacity, TASS said.
