UN Secretary-General António Guterres will attend the Peace Memorial Ceremony to be held in Hiroshima on the 6th, and will appeal to world leaders to abolish nuclear weapons as soon as possible.

UN Secretary-General Guterres will arrive in Hiroshima on the evening of the 5th and attend the Peace Memorial Ceremony to be held on the 6th.



It will be the first time in 12 years for an incumbent UN Secretary-General to attend the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony, and the first for Secretary-General Guterres.



Prior to his visit, Secretary-General Guterres held a press conference in New York on the 3rd, stating, "I would like to convey that the use of nuclear weapons is absolutely unacceptable. The world must learn the lessons of the tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki." At the ceremony, Hiroshima, the city that suffered the atomic bombing, will appeal to world leaders for the immediate abolition of nuclear weapons.



In addition, Secretary-General Guterres plans to meet with Prime Minister Kishida and Mayor Matsui of Hiroshima City on the 6th, meet atomic bomb survivors, and talk with young people working on issues such as nuclear disarmament.
