Nancy Pelosi's initiative, taken as part of an Asian tour, is seen by China as a provocation, support for Taiwan independence supporters and a reneging of the United States' promise not to have official relations with the island.

Evoking a "provocation of the USA in Taiwan", Jean-Luc Mélenchon estimates in his weekly blog post that there "is only one China" in reference to the continental territory and that "Taiwan is a component in its own right of China", using a term defended by the regime in Beijing but refused by the authorities in Taipei.

Coming from an independence party, the current president Tsai Ing-wen refuses, unlike the previous government, to recognize that the island and the continent are part of “one China”.

"The Chinese will solve the problem between them. There is no other reasonable outcome possible", swept Mr. Mélenchon, who accuses the United States of wanting to "open a new front".

A position held for a long time by the Insoumis, who said last year that he refused "the cold war with China", concerning a proposal for a resolution in the National Assembly in favor of Taiwan's participation in the work of organizations international.

In the evening, the Chinese Embassy in France thanked Jean-Luc Melenchon by tweet "for his constant support for the policy of one China".

Beijing on Thursday launched the largest military maneuvers in its history around Taiwan, a muscular response to the visit of the leader of the American deputies Nancy Pelosi on the island.

The Chinese military launched a series of missiles that flew over Taiwan before falling for the first time in Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Twenty-two Chinese fighter jets briefly entered Taiwan's air defense zone on Thursday, Taiwan's defense minister said.

For Beijing, these maneuvers are "a necessary and legitimate measure" after Ms. Pelosi's visit.

Visits by foreign officials and parliamentarians have also increased in recent years, provoking the ire of Beijing.
