At least eight people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, controlled by the Palestinian militant group Hezbollah.

In a statement on the same day, the Israeli military said, "In response to the imminent danger, fighters have been used to strike the Gaza Strip. A special situation has been declared on the domestic front."

The death toll figures are mixed for Israeli and Palestinians.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health said there have been eight deaths so far, including a five-year-old girl.

He added that about 40 people were injured.

The Israeli military said the airstrikes targeted the facilities of the militant group 'Palestinian Islamic Jihad' (PIJ) and estimated that 15 militants were killed.

A PIJ official who was attacked said Israeli airstrikes killed high-ranking commander Taiseer al-Jabari.

It is estimated that the number of casualties in the airstrike was the largest since the 11-day war in May last year.

The Israeli army has predicted further attacks, saying it is "not over yet."

Israeli interim Prime Minister Yair Rapids also warned in a statement that "we will not allow terrorist groups in Gaza to threaten Israeli citizens. We will find out whoever threatens Israel."

Earlier, Israeli forces arrested Basami al-Saadi, a high-ranking PIJ leader, during a search for the West Bank in Palestine.

At the time, the PIJ leader, Jiad al-Nakala, told the pro-Iranian Lebanese broadcaster Al Mayadin, "There is no red line in the battle (with Israel). Tel Aviv and other Israeli cities will be destroyed by rockets of resistance." He foretold revenge.

Since then, Israel has closed roads near the Gaza Strip for fear of retaliatory attacks against it, and has assembled a large number of troops on the Gaza border.

In addition, ahead of the airstrike on that day, Iron Dome, a low-altitude air defense network, was deployed and an order to mobilize reserve forces was also issued.
