A total of

18 aerial means

participate in the work of extinguishing the fire that has been declared this Friday in the Avila municipality of

Santa Cruz del Valle

, one of the most sensitive areas of Castilla y León from the environmental point of view.

In the work to try to suffocate the flames, land resources from the

forest firefighting

operation (Infocal), the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Miteco), the Community of Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha are also working.

The Junta de Castilla y León has declared this Level 1 fire, on a scale of 0 to 3 of danger, as

it can affect more than 30 wooded hectares

in this place in the Tiétar Valley, in the south of the province.

Currently, 18 air assets are working to put out the flames: 11 helicopters;

two cargo planes on the ground and a third coordination plane;

two bombing helicopters and two amphibious aircraft.

Likewise, three technicians are part of the operation deployed in the area;

six environmental agents;

13 fire engines;

six ground crews;

two bulldozers;

five helicopter crews and three Forest Fire Reinforcement Brigades (BRIF).

The municipality of Santa Cruz del Valle, located 73 kilometers south of the capital, has a normal population of 324 inhabitants, although

in summer it multiplies.

It is one of the places with the highest risk in the community, taking into account its natural wealth and its high temperatures, which is why it is called the Andalusia of Ávila.

At the end of July 2009, this area of the province suffered

a major fire

in which 5,000 hectares of various municipal districts burned and two people lost their lives.

It is not the only one that this region of Avila has suffered, which has historically been greatly affected by this type of accident, especially the municipality of Pedro Bernardo, close to Santa Cruz del Valle.

So far this summer, the province of Ávila has suffered several fires, among which the one in Cebreros stands out, which devastated more than 4,200 hectares, together with the one in San Juan de la Nava, in which more than 500 burned.
