Colleagues and friends of journalist Toru Kubota, who was detained in Myanmar, where the military holds real power, held a press conference on the 3rd and appealed for his release as soon as possible.

According to the local Japanese embassy and other sources, journalist Toru Kubota was detained by security authorities at the site of a protest demonstration against the military in Yangon, Myanmar's largest city, on the 30th of last month.

On the 3rd, Kubota's business associates and friends held a press conference in Tokyo. Among them, journalist Hiroki Kitazuno, who was detained by the security authorities in Yangon last year and released about a month later, said, "Kubota There is also information that a Burmese man who was arrested with him was assaulted, so I cannot guarantee that there is something wrong with him.I would like to ask for his release as soon as possible."

Myo Kyaw Kyaw, a friend of mine who is a Myanmar resident in Japan, said, "When I heard the news that I was detained, I was very surprised and heartbroken. I would like to ask the Japanese government. I want you to ask the military to release the young people who are not here."



Regarding Mr. Kubota's detention, the Japan Pen Club and International Pen issued a joint statement on the 2nd calling for his immediate release.
