Iran and the US have announced a resumption of their indirect talks on reviving the international nuclear deal in Vienna.

Chief negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani will leave Tehran in a few hours, Iranian state media reported on Wednesday, citing the Foreign Ministry.

Mediated by the European Union, “ideas presented by different sides should be discussed”.

A US government official said that special envoy Rob Malley would also travel to Vienna later this week.

Details were not given.

Recent round ended with no agreement

The West is trying to save the international nuclear agreement of 2015, in which Germany is also a party.

It has been on the brink since then-US President Donald Trump unilaterally resigned in 2018 and imposed new sanctions on Iran.

Iran then began gradually breaching its commitments.

After eleven months of indirect negotiations between Iranian and US representatives under President Joe Biden, a revival initially seemed within reach in March.

The most recent round took place in June but ended with no agreement.

The agreement aims to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

The government in Tehran denies such a goal.
