7:28 a.m .: The world welcomes the departure of the ship loaded with corn from Odessa

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “warmly” welcomed the ship's departure, expressing hope that the resumption of Ukrainian exports, enabled by an international agreement, “will bring much-needed stability and aid to global food security. ".

British Foreign Minister Liz Truss for her part insisted that “there can be no new bombardment of the port of Odessa”, in reference to a Russian strike on the Ukrainian port on July 23 which had raised concern over the implementation of the agreement.

During a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, French President Emmanuel Macron assured him of the continuation of "European efforts" to help kyiv export its cereals.

Moscow also deemed the event “very positive”.

"Let's hope that the agreements will be implemented by all parties and that the mechanisms will work effectively," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

7:22 a.m .: Sanctions against Russia weigh heavily on its economy

The impact of Western sanctions on the Russian economy is far greater than official figures show, according to a study by Yale University, also stressing that a "pivot to China" seems unrealistic.

"A common narrative has emerged", say the authors of this study: the economic sanctions imposed by Western countries against Russia since the invasion of Ukraine, have created "a 'war of economic attrition which is wreaking havoc on the West", given the supposed "resilience" or even "prosperity" of the Russian economy".

"It's simply false," say these experts from the Yale School of Management, denouncing "statistics selected" by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, according to their analysis, “the departures of companies and the sanctions paralyze the Russian economy, in the short and long term”.

Economic sanctions, therefore, deter many companies and countries from continuing to trade with Russia.

And the country is struggling to obtain spare parts and raw materials, or to obtain certain essential technologies.
