Temperatures in Japan are approaching record levels

Temperatures rose across Japan on Tuesday, approaching 40 degrees Celsius in a number of areas, with the Meteorological Agency warning of heat-related fatigue.

According to the Japanese "Kyodo" news agency, the government issued an alert covering large areas from eastern to western Japan, where it was directed to drink water and avoid leaving buildings to avoid heat stress.

The highest temperature record in Japan (41.1 °C) was recorded in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture in 2018, and similarly in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture in 2020.

The weather agency said Tuesday that temperatures are expected to rise to 41 degrees Celsius in Kumagaya, north of Tokyo, 39 degrees Celsius in Nagoya, central Japan, and 37 degrees Celsius in the center of the capital.

Among a total of 914 monitoring points nationwide, temperatures rose to 30 degrees Celsius or more in 380 locations as of 9:00 a.m. local time.

Countries around the world have been suffering from high temperatures for weeks.
