Off before the start: The first edition of the Design Miami trade fair in Paris planned for this year has been cancelled.

It should have taken place in October parallel to the new art fair Art+ par Art Basel, on the largest square in the Seine metropolis, the Place de la Concorde.

The Paris police chief, Laurent Nunez, has now lodged an objection to this venue in the immediate vicinity of the Elysée Palace and the American embassy.

For security reasons, the fair does not get permission to pitch its tents in the shadow of the famous obelisk.

Apparently, "yellow vest"-type demonstrations or other disruptions are feared.

According to the organizers, 46 exhibitors had already confirmed their participation and are now getting their participation fees back.

The organizers let it be known that efforts were made to find an alternative venue within the city, but without success due to the short time available.

A few weeks ago, a robbery at the TEFAF art fair in Maastricht, Netherlands, caused a sensation.

In addition, climate activists have been challenging security forces in British and Italian museums for the past few weeks by sticking themselves to works of art.

It is possible that these incidents also played a role in the decision in Paris.
