- After the summer of 1942, the local population gave away remnants of the bombs, almost as souvenirs, she says.

An unknown force bombed Borgholm during World War II.

It was shortly after midnight on 24 July 1942 that two unknown aircraft dropped a number of incendiary bombs and a total of eight explosive bombs in the Borge Hage nature reserve, midway between Borgholm and the castle ruins.

A German provocation

Soon after the bombing, the then Soviet state was blamed for the bombings.

But they dismissed their involvement and referred to it as a German provocation, according to surviving telegrams.

- Sweden reacted with gross insult.

Sweden was not at all shy, but employed the Russian Soviet government quite hard to get an explanation for the violation of a neutral country, says Christina Erlandsson.
