The Department of Health in Abu Dhabi has called on outpatient clinics, hospitals, pharmaceutical facilities, health insurance companies and health insurance claims management companies to adhere to the standard of drug re-dispensing.

The department clarified that the criterion for re-dispensing medicines stipulates a commitment to re-dispense in the event of a chronic disease, taking into account the necessity of stabilizing the patient's condition, which is determined by the treating physician.

The doctor must also have a clear treatment plan for his patient, with documented evidence for this purpose in the event of treatment of the condition, stressing that the total period for prescribing the drug without consulting the doctor should not exceed 12 months from the date of the start of treatment, where the drug is dispensed with a maximum of three months for the prescription Initial, provided that the re-disbursement does not exceed three times, with a maximum of three months for each re-disbursement.

The procedures for re-dispensing medicines included allowing re-dispensing for a longer period without visiting the treating doctor in exceptional cases, such as the patient being under the supervision of another doctor outside Abu Dhabi, noting that the validity period of the first prescription is 60 days from the date of its issuance, and the validity period for re-dispensing It is for a month, and requests for early re-disbursement of the drug can be accepted within a period of time not exceeding 10 days from the scheduled date.

The department’s procedures excluded medicines used to treat non-chronic cases from re-dispensing prescriptions, such as antibiotics, over-the-counter medicines, medicines for infertility and impotence, and others, pointing out that the procedures for re-dispensing prescriptions do not apply to controlled and semi-controlled medicines.
