Zhang Xingqian, a metal physicist, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a researcher of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Physics, died in Beijing on July 29, 2022, at the age of 101.

  Zhang Xingqian was born on October 16, 1921 in Wuyi, Hebei.

He graduated from the Department of Mining and Metallurgy of Wuhan University in 1942, obtained a master's degree in physical metallurgy from the American Academy of Science and Technology in 1949, and a doctorate in physical metallurgy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1952.

In 1991, he was elected as a member (academician) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

  Zhang Xingqian systematically studied the deformation and fracture mechanisms of pure aluminum and its binary single-phase alloys during creep, especially the behavior of grain boundaries.

At the same time, studying metal physics, he devoted himself to the cause of nuclear weapons, participated in the research and manufacture of nuclear weapons in my country, and made important contributions to the development of nuclear weapons in China and the training of young scientific and technological talents.

  Since 2022, the Republic has so far lost 23 academicians of the two academies.
