According to witnesses, large clouds of dust and smoke can be seen rising into the sky in the vicinity of the silo.

It is still unclear if anyone was injured.

Guessed it would collapse

In a statement to Reuters, Lebanon's transport minister said more of the silo's parts could collapse.

The condition of the silo and the risk of collapse have been known for a couple of weeks now, and residents in the area have been asked to wear masks and stay indoors.

The calls have come in recent weeks when an orange glow was seen from the silo.

The glow must have been caused by a slow fire going on inside.

According to Reuters, Lebanese authorities have said that the fire was caused by the summer heat which ignited fermenting grain in the silo.

Several people who saw the sight have expressed concern that the explosion will repeat itself in 2020.

Earlier in July, the Lebanese Finance Minister Amin Salam said in a statement that the situation had been complicated but that a technical investigation was underway to put out the fire.

The reason it took time, Salam said, was because there was a high risk of the fire spreading when extinguishing attempts were made from above by helicopters.
