Heavy shelling of Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine

The city of Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine was subjected to intense Russian bombardment, perhaps the strongest since the war began in February, and led to the deaths of two people, authorities said Sunday.

"Mykolaev was subjected to intense shelling today. It may be the strongest yet," the city's mayor, Oleksandr Senkevich, wrote on Telegram, noting that powerful explosions sounded in two waves during the night of Saturday and Sunday.

The region's governor, Vitaly Kim, said two civilians were killed in the strikes.

Other strikes hit the regions of Kharkiv (east) and Sumy (northeast).

Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov announced that some buildings were damaged in a series of explosions in Ukraine's second city.

One person was killed and two others wounded in the Sumy region, which has been the target of more than 50 strikes in the past 24 hours, according to Governor Dmytro Zhivitsky.

Donetsk region governor Pavlo Kirilenko, where Moscow has focused the bulk of its attacks, said three civilians were killed and eight wounded in the bombing on Saturday.
