Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that Tehran will continue nuclear negotiations but wants to reach a good, strong and sustainable agreement, while Washington accused Tehran of obstructing the revival of the nuclear agreement.

Abdullahian added, during a meeting in Tehran with heads of Iranian cultural representations in the world, that the Iranian government continues economic diplomacy with the countries of the world as an important work on the agenda of the Iranian diplomatic apparatus.

For his part, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said that the new draft put forward by the EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, regarding the agreement on the Iranian nuclear file is based on what was reached in the Vienna negotiations.

At a press conference in Washington, Price accused Iran of obstructing the revival of the nuclear deal and a return to mutual compliance with its terms.

European proposal

The European Union announced last Tuesday that it had proposed a new draft text to revive the Iranian nuclear deal, and while Tehran confirmed at the time that it would present its opinion, Washington said it was studying a response to the draft.

"I have now put on the table a text detailing the lifting of sanctions as well as the nuclear steps needed to restore operation of the JCPOA," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said, referring to the 2015 agreement.

In an article in the Financial Times, he added that after 15 months of intense and constructive negotiations in Vienna, and the countless interactions with the participants, all opportunities to make important additional concessions had run out, as he described it.

"If the deal is rejected, we risk facing a serious nuclear crisis with the potential to further isolate Iran and its people," Borrell wrote.

long walk

It is noteworthy that the 2015 agreement between Tehran and Washington, Paris, London, Berlin, Moscow and Beijing allowed the lifting of sanctions on Iran in return for reducing its nuclear activities and ensuring the peace of its program.

Washington unilaterally withdrew from the agreement in 2018, during the era of former President Donald Trump, re-imposing economic sanctions on Iran, which responded by gradually retreating from most of its obligations under it.

Iran and the powers affiliated with the agreement began discussions to revive it in April 2021 in Vienna, with the indirect participation of the United States and facilitated by the European Union.

Despite achieving great progress in the negotiations, the talks were suspended last March, with the remaining points of disagreement between Tehran and Washington that the stakeholders have not yet been able to bridge the gap.

In late June, the two sides held indirect talks in Doha with the facilitation of the European Union, which ended without achieving progress in the file.
