The success reports from the Federal Ministry of Economics about the EU agreement on a gas emergency plan should not fail to mention that Germany is paying for the “strategic mistakes” of its past governments.

On the one hand, this is correct because it alludes to the dependence on Russian gas.

On the other hand, it is also a party-political diversionary tactic, because the green leadership of the ministry wants to cleanse itself.

The reason for Germany's dependence on gas has two sides: Russia and the raw material on which Germany is only so dependent because it first wanted to phase out nuclear power and then coal.

The Greens played anything but an extra role, especially since the gas pipe, which is now always the focus, Nord Stream 1, is a red-green one.

An agreement that is not

This role is catching up with the Green Minister again at European level.

Demanding solidarity after EU states had to listen to Germany for years about how energy and climate policy should work is bold.

The praise for the agreement is now so thick that it covers up the fact that it isn't.

The German government would have liked to have enforced mandatory savings targets enforced from Brussels in order to get safely through the winter.

The EU states will only accommodate this very ambitious, one could also say: in the old tradition, extremely self-confident attitude if Germany deals honestly with its "strategic mistakes" - including the green ones.
