Most drownings in Sweden happen at bathing spots, and how many drown depends very much on the weather.

The stable ice during the winter and the delayed boating and bathing season may be reasons why only 22 people have died in drowning accidents until the end of June this year.

- Another part of this is that municipalities have become better at preventing drowning and that individuals have taken to bathing water.

But there we see that there is much more to do, says Mikael Olausson at the Swedish Lifesaving Society.

Men overrepresented

He warns that the drowning figures usually go away when the heat comes.

Something else noticeable in the statistics is that many more men drown than women.

In 2021, 80 percent of those who drowned were men and boys.

In the video, Mikael Olausson tells more about the drowning statistics and the factors behind them.
