A frontal impact killed two people and injured three in the night from Saturday to Sunday on the A7 at Auberives-sur-Varèze (Isère).

The collision took place around 3:20 am, between a car driven by an 80-year-old man and another in which four people were.

The first vehicle was traveling in the wrong direction, reports

Its driver is among the deceased victims.

In the other vehicle, a 37-year-old man lost his life.

The 67-year-old driver and his 28-year-old daughter, a passenger, were seriously injured.

An 11-year-old child who was also on board was airlifted to a hospital.

A confused driver

Investigators believe that the octogenarian, suffering from Alzheimer's disease, would have found himself at a toll without means of payment.

Disoriented, he would then have turned around, driving in the opposite direction on the fast lane.

Noting his departure, his daughter had tried to locate him, in vain.

The highway was temporarily closed to allow emergency services to intervene.
